Heaven Taken by Storm by Thomas Watson

– 2min Read

During the mid-1600s, Thomas Watson became known as an esteemed Puritan due to his great preaching and diligent service to the Lord. Not only did Watson pastor his church for 16 years, but he also experienced persecution and imprisonment. Thomas Watson still managed to write many books which are filled with wise instruction and biblical counsel. He is known for his astute clarity while explaining the deep truths of God’s word. His vast understanding and knowledge of the scriptures are seen in each of his magnificent writings. One of which is his book Heaven Taken by Storm.

“..the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force.”

– Matthew 11:12

Here we have the verse which sets the stage for one of the greatest books I have ever read. Heaven Taken by Storm by Thomas Watson is a must-read for all. It is to “Show the holy violence a Christian is to put forth in the pursuit after glory.” This is not to be confused with an effort to gain salvation, but rather a pursuit to grow in righteousness until we reach the kingdom of heaven. Thomas Watson classifies holy violence as this:

“This holy violence is also when we are violent for our own salvation. ‘Give diligence to make your calling and election sure’ (2 Peter 1:10). The Greek word signifies anxious carefulness, or a serious bearing of one’s thoughts about the business of eternity, such a care as sets head and heart at work. In this channel of religion all a Christian’s zeal should run.”

– Thomas Watson, Heaven Taken by Storm

Where are we to show such diligence and carefulness? Throughout his book, Watson spurs the reader to read the Word, prayer, self-examination, holy conversation and so much more. Each chapter is to the point with every sentence begging to be highlighted and remembered. I could go on and on with encouragement to read this book but I will leave you with one more quote as Watson encourages best:

“Christians, you have but a little way to go, a little more violence, a few more tears to shed, a few more Sabbaths to keep, and then your hopes shall be crowned with the beatifical sight of God. When the vapor is blown away, then we may see the sun clearly: so when this short vapor of life is blown away then we shall behold Christ the Sun of Righteousness in all His glory. ‘We shall see Him as He is’ (1 John 3:2).”
